Elbert Donatelli: Let's walk this back. If this is LaGuardia, then you have to have gone thru your guidance counselor, and done all the paperwork stuff - and you MUST be a student already in the NYC schools - you cannot take an audition, *get in*, and THEN move. Other performing arts high schools have similar requirements. So let us know what is going on with all *that* first. As a career vocal/choral teacher in NY state, and someone who has heard thousands of auditions, I can tell you that it is not the song we are interested in - it is YOU. You need to show - right away - that you have good posture, breathing, phrasing, INTONATION, rhythm, etc. You will be asked to sight-sing - so, can you read music? Do you solfege? Does the school have particular requirements - one show tunes, one art song, something in a foreign language, for example? You need to tell us more about you and your preparation (you DO have a fine private voice teacher for many years, I hope . . ) a! nd about the school - then those of us here with education and decades of experience - and there are many of us - can help you a lot more, than we can with your very vague question.I hope that you do not read this, get discouraged, and never write back - we want to help, but need more input from you....Show more
Lorine Helwick: That depends a great deal on the way that you sing, and the sort of music that you can do best. The people at the audition will no doubt be happy for you to do a song from any genre - rock, country, R&B, classical, jazz... as long as you can hit a home run with it. It has to be a song that shows them why you have potential.Singing comes in many styles and flavors, and generally singers have a particular style that is their forte, their strength. The audition people will not be expecting you to be able to sing anything and everything, but they will be hoping for you to do something exceptional and innovative with the song that you do pick.I can't! really suggest a song, because I don't know how you sing. I c! ould say that I would love to hear someone do Roxanne, by the Police, but that might be completely contrary to your style. Consider the music that motivated you to be a singer in the first place. Go with your strengths. You want an actual song suggestion? Maybe something they would not expect. How about "Ave Maria". Very classical. That song is frequently played at funerals, it brings tears to people's eyes. Listen to performances of that song, think about what makes it special. If you can do it with subtlety and depth, I think that could be pretty impressive....Show more
