Logan Bero: Hunters are conservationists. The money that supports programs comes from taxes levied on guns, ammo etc.... The supposed animal lovers contribute nothing but "feelings"
Lawana Neemann: Some talking points;1. Everyone hunts, If he eats, he hunts. He hunts by proxy, paying someone else to do the actual killing. Even if he is a vegetarian, he hunts, by proxy, to preserve the crops.2. Guns are not inherently evil, if they were, cops wouldn't carry them.3. 90% of ALL conservation funding comes from Pittman-Robertson Act taxes and license fees.4. The deer population increased from 300,000 in 1900 to 20,000,000 in 2001 due to selective hunting, and wildlife management paid for by the Pittman-Robertson Act, and if we just let nature take its course, the numbers will be reduced back to the 1900 number by starvation, so to stop hunting now would be to condemn 98.5% of the deer to a slow death by starvation. Does he really support starving over 19 million de! er to death?==========================================NOTE to theHoundDawg;1. Hunting does not involve the "unlawful killing of a human", so it is not murder.2. If you eat, you hunt, and you are a hypocrite to condemn others for hunting just because they are not wimps like you who only hunt by proxy, hiring someone else to do their killing for them....Show more

Myron Leftwich: Your were right to bring the DNR into it. Animal populations are monitored by them. Yes, animal populations will take care of themselves, over population will be taken care of through starvation and harsh winter conditions. I believe it is better and more humane to allow hunters to harvest a proper proportion of an population to en! sure that the weaker once have a better chance of getting enou! gh food and making it through winter. Animals are not people, they are not going to organize a committee and see how they can go about increasing food supply. ...Show more
Roxane Leathers: explain to him that it is your right to choose and not his place to make judgement. Maybe you were not even planning to shoot any animals? maybe you were interested in the shooting sports of trap or skeet or clays? Whatever the case may be I have very little tollerance for people that jump to conclusions that fast when they dont even know the facts to start with. I would never say a bad thing about your dad because I have never met him and I do not have anything to back up my statements. Like this, your dad could be wrong about hunting in the ways that he does not understand modern science and how it has played a major role in conservation just the same way hunters do. He may be set in his ways, but in the quiet of his own space he will have to sort out what is right and what is wr! ong. I personaly would not give it another thought, he should allow you to find your own way and respect you for that. So good luck and welcome fellow hunter/shooter!...Show more
Wilburn Denice: Hunting big game with a dog is a good way to get it killed.Preadators almost always go for the weakest target.Unless you are also walking around a duck,a dog is just bait.
Cristopher Gavalis: Beat him over the head with it. That should get his attention.
Matt Tiry: pealover17 -I don't think there's anything you can say that will make him change his mind. However, it isn't true that nature takes care of creature balance. The way man has changed the landscape, nature can no longer keep the balance. My father was onced hire to kill wild doe in an area of Virginia because of over-population. He said it was terrible to see because the doe and offspring were thin as rails from starvation. that's the worst of it; when the land can't support their diet or water requ! irements it becomes so sad. It happens much more than one realizes. Mo! re and more as civilization encroaces on the wilderness, animals really have no where to go. As their habitat shrinks, their population doesn't immediately follow suit. I don't know if you'll find any pictures on the net or in the library that shows the effects of animal over-population, etc. but that might make a big impression. Now if I may humbly ask you to answer sincerely, did you really buy a shotgun to help reduce animal population? Even some hunters claim that why they hunt, but deep down, they really do it for the meat or the sport. It may sound like symantecs, since both reasons do help, but it's not the reason these two groups hunt. They would continue even if the population were balanced. So, are you honestly out to reduce population, or out to enjoy the sport?Since Dad was honest, you should be nothing less than honest as well. And if your motives are sincere, then I beg your forgiveness. but in the sense of honesty, I had to ask. good luck, and maybe ! you and dad may just have to agree to disagree...Show more
Teodoro Lamond: sounds to me, that your dad is a read dork when it comes to guns, .my suggestion would be, for you to ignore his ranting about guns.if you are of adult age & don't have to depend on him for your livelihood, he has NO right to get on your case about the shot gun
Cristopher Gavalis: Is your dad anti-gun or anti-hunting, because the two are not always the same thing. Hunting can be argued to have a very positive effect on conservation of species, but at the same time your father makes a valid point about nature taking care of itself. If a species of animal begins to overpopulate, over time it will either go extinct or adapt to change its needs, be it through less birth or less food needed to survive, or a different or new species will become it's predator. That's just basic evolution. But because that takes many many generations, hunting is a good way to "control" populations, thereby sa! ving themselves. I don't want to give you advice that will come off as! you sounding like a smartass to him, but a point you could make is that because of humans' disproportionate effect on ecosystems everywhere, it is necessary to do things like this instead of implementing population control on humans. Because, in a deep, macroscopic way, the only way to make the earth better for animals is for humans to revert to being true animals themselves, and that isn't going to happen without some cataclysmic event happening. So I don't know if this could convince your father, or anyone really, but if both of your arguments are about the bigger picture (as in, artificial or natural population control), then I can't figure another way to argue it. If your dad is against hunting he must be against animal farming (which is arguably more cruel and unnatural), and if he is not you could use that to your advantage. However, when trying to debate a point it is important you don't downplay the other's feelings about their side, because that will cause the! m to become defensive and they may stick with their argument even in lieu of evidence against it. So if he isn't against animal farming, don't call him an idiot hypocrite or anything that would cause him to become extremely defensive of his position. The best way to make people change their minds is to let them believe that they have changed themselves, not that you have changed them (even though that's what you're trying to do)....Show more

Rayford Speziale: I've got 3 words that are a good reason to hunt: Chronic Wasting Disease
Lissette Semon: Here is my argument on how hunting is good for the environment:It is simple, when you harvest game, it feeds you and you do not need buy meat at the store.By hunting, you do not depend on the meat industry.(I don't mean to sound like a PETArd)The meat industry is actually very harmful to the environment on so many levels.1. Take into consideration the fact tha! t grain (feed) has to be planted on a field that probably used to be woods once upon a time.1a. Perhaps the fertilizers and tractors and machines used to plant and harvest run on fossil fuels, they pollute.(A significant amount of grain harvested is spent on feedlots, this means there is less for everyone else to eat)2. Livestock is raised en masse, so things like wastes and excrements accumulate very fast, this = more pollutants.2a. More land is developed in order to sustain the mass livestock on cattle ranches so there is less virgin land.2b. Extremely large amounts of water will be needed to sustain the livestock, consequently this water would be taken out of the local ecosystem.3. Transportation of livestock (to grocery stores, restaurants, slaughter houses, etc. depends most likely on trucks fueled by diesel, a fossil fuel which pollutes.4. At slaughter houses large amounts of waste is collected from animal carcasses, again this waste accumulates.5. Imagine how much ! energy is spent on refrigeration and utilities at meat processing facil! ities.6. Imagine how much waste is spent on packaging components when the meat is marketed. There are probably way more factors that I could not think of at the moment. Anyway, when you hunt, you do not depend on the meat industry for your protein needs. Also, fees for game tags are used for conservation and forestry concerns, and other things like that. This point of view is just from the environmental perspective.Take into consideration also the ecological and biological point of view as well.
