BMW 840 and 850 Series cars maintenance, reliability questions?

Buddy Ardd: The 8 series was a really neat car from BMW. However, it falls victim to the beginnings of BMW's relationship with Bosch and first generation of highly advanced, highly technical electronic components first used in the 750iL. This includes items like a high-speed BUS communication network built within the car. If a nightmarish 'ahead of its time' electronics system wasn't enough, the engines aren't very reliable either. The M60/M62 V8 used in the 840 and the M70 V12 used in the 850 are not mechanically dependable engines. They are plagued with cooling system problems, hydraulic issues and you guessed it, electronics problems. Toward the end of the run for the 8 series, some of the earlier problems had been worked out but there are still problems that will pop up that could leave you staring at a $1,000 + bill from a mechanic or dealership. My best advice if you really want an 8 would be to find a late model (95-97) that has been well taken care of and well! maintenance with low(er) miles. Avoid the Nikasil engine block on the 840. Be prepared to spend about $500-1500 per year on repairs and upkeep....Show more

Tawny Grosskreutz: basically you are looking at $500 minumum per visit to a shop QUALIFIED to service that vehicleYOU cannot afford this car

Idell Dufort: Here ya go, friend... The following website is a link for the 8 Series questions and answers.Hey Ralph, how do you know he can't afford it? Don't base your answers on your own financial situation.

Ayesha Genova: Sorry Ralph, you little peon, I'll have you know I'm an Electro Optical Engineer in Los Angeles and I can afford not only this car, but 2. Maybe I'll get the V8 and the V12. Don't mess with money.
