Sharron Salin: I can recomend taking the train from Budapest to Balaton, cost about 2500 HUF one way.I can also recomend staying in Balatonfured. There are lots of places to stay and in October it will be very quiet.

Gaynell Pizzaro: The train and bus tickets cost around the same, 2000-3000 forints. The train may be a bit more comfortable! (you can walk around etc.) but is a bit slower, around 3 hour! s. (bus may be 2 hours)There are multiple trains and buses departing each day from the Southern Train Station ("Deli Palyaudvar") and the Népliget bus station. Most of the restaurants, guest houses etc. close down for the off-season, especially in smaller towns.If you still want to go, I'd recommend Kesztely (so you can visit the thermal bath at Héviz) or Balatonfüred (and check out Tihany). There won't be any direct line, so you'd have to transfer (maybe multiple times!), the s! taff doesn't speak English, you may miss your connection and it takes just too long.
